Who Pays? The costs of a wedding | Print |  E-mail
Traditionally the brides' family has been responsible for many of the wedding costs. But with the increasing costs and complexity of weddings, the costs are being separated differently on a case by case basis. Certain people aren't being given the duty of having to pay for certain things. Often the families now split the expenses, as well as other participants in the wedding paying their own way. The bride and groom now often pay for a share of the wedding themselves as well.

A way to recover some costs at the reception is to have the guests pay for drinks, and dances. Games may also be played to collect money, and having the bride kidnapped (so the happy couple can have a few moments of rest) then collecting ransom to get her back is another way.

The traditional split up costs are

Brides Family -

  • Invitations, announcements and other wedding stationary
  • Ceremony and reception and all costs included
  • Food and drink
  • DJ/musicians
  • Flowers (not including bouquets for the bride and bridesmaids, corsages for mothers, and boutonnières for groomsmen)
  • Wedding cake
  • Photography (including their own photo album)
  • Transportation for bridal party from bride's home to ceremony
  • Groom's wedding ring
  • Gifts for attendants, parents and groom
  • Bridesmaid's luncheon
  • Wedding dress
  • Brides parents attire
  • Travel and lodging for the bride's wedding party and close family.
  • Medical examination and blood test

  • Bride's ring (often bought and paid for by the groom personally)
  • Marriage license and other legal documents
  • Gifts for attendants, parents, and bride
  • Officiant's fee
  • Bridal bouquet, boutonnières for best man and groomsman
  • Attire for groom and grooms parents
